Airbnb 2022 Category Icons
On May 11th, 2022, Airbnb launched a new feature that highlighted categories, making it easier to discover unique homes that travelers never knew existed. The company wanted to change how travelers searched for destinations - especially when people were becoming flexible in how they lived and worked. For many travel-based apps, users have heavily relied on a search box, giving only a few thoughts of destinations. The listings are categorized based on a traveler’s preferred dates and location.

Icon Design
I collaborated with Icon Specialist Alana Hanada to organize a plan to execute a list of new categories for the 2022 Summer launch. Product Leaders approached us on how to create unique icons for all 56 new categories. By browsing through existing homes in each category, Alana and I iterated on nearly 200+ icon designs and countless reviews with Airbnb Design Leadership.
Split Stays in Categories
Split Stays automatically appear in your search results when searching a specific destination. They also appear within 14 categories — including Camping, National Parks, Skiing, and Surfing — to inspire you to stay in two destinations as part of a more extended trip.
When viewing Split Stays on a map, an animated line visually connects the two homes to show you the distance between them and the sequence of the stays. Once you select a Split Stay, you’re guided through an easy-to-use interface to book each stay, one home at a time.
Airbnb Press and Release announcement
Categories were a big hit and brought up a lot of attention in the media. Several articles like, Fast Company and Tech Crunch, highlighted the new feature and icon designs. To see the full announcement and release, visit Airbnb’s 2022 Announcement page.
